This course is for anyone determined to break into sound in the games industry and will give you the skills you need to work in sound design, audio post-production, audio implementation, audio management and beyond. You will be given an initial grounding in techniques and technologies associated with sound design for games and apps as well as being introduced to the emerging models of audio development within the rapidly expanding games industry.

The rapid technological developments around games and apps are core to this course in which you use the latest Game Engines, Middleware and related software. Implementing the latest audio SDK’s in conjunction with the freshest techniques and methods. Focused attention to the design and implementation of 2D and 3D sound, ambisonics, binaural recording and procedural audio for VR/AR environments whilst maintaining core studio and audio production techniques for industry.

Based at our brand new media facility in the heart of Bristol, boasting 11 world-class studios with API 1608 and SSL mixing desks, 5.1 dedicated studio with PMC monitors. 5.1 Lecture theatre/gaming room. Plus a vast array of microphones including ambisonic and holophone, portable recorders and dedicated Foley Room. Full VR/ AR Devices and setups available for study, research and play including Oculus and iOs products. Powered by Alienware Windows machines and Mac suites.

Throughout the course, there are multiple opportunities for you to gain real world experience plus students can pitch for real projects through our in-house commercial arm, dBs Productions.

In Bristol alone, there are over 50 Game/VR business, and through places like the ‘Bristol Games Hub’ we endeavour to have you working on live briefs and getting out there into work. As part of the second year you undertake work based learning in which you utilise these connections for you to gain experience before graduating.

Students have already gained roles with companies such as Enzien Audio in London Playstation VR and Alphasphere in Bristol. 


You will learn from lecturers who are actively working and connected to the industry through production, composition, sound design, interactive audio and musical app development projects and have worked with Sony, Samsung, Reality Jockey (RJDJ), Hospital Records and Lego.

The course also benefits from our extensive guest lecture programme, meeting leading industry professionals ranging from respected producers, specialist technical staff from world-class audio companies to record label and game audio specialists such as Alastair Lindsay, Head of Music at Sony Interactive Entertainment Europe and Robert Thomas who has worked on huge projects like the Inception movie app and Dark Knight app.

UK Applicants must have GCSE English Language at C or above, or an equivalent qualification such as Functional Skills Level 2.

Applicants who do not have English as their first language must have:

IELTS, minimum of 6.0 in each category (within the last 2 years) or an equivalent qualification.


The tuition fees for the 2019/2020 academic year:

UK and EU full-time fees: £9,000 per year

Students on this course are also official students of the University of St Mark & St John, our validating university, and can apply to Student Finance for a tuition fee loan to cover the full cost of your course. There are also loans available to help you cover living costs too.
