OLIVER THOMPSON

CENTRE MANAGER | CORNWALL

What is a memorable musical memory from your childhood?

Hearing Purple rain by Prince. We lived in Italy when I was a child during the 80s and we were at a dinner party at the home of an American family. They put on this music and I was completely blown away! My mum had always been into stuff like Marvin Gaye and Kool & The Gang, but I'd never heard anything like this before. I became a big Prince fan from that moment, until he started calling himself silly names and I heard the Pixies!

What was your most embarrassing music-related moment?

I got kicked off the Decks in what was then the biggest nightclub in Greece for playing American house imports when they wanted Trance... I had to walk through a packed club with my record box to get my coat.

What three albums would you take to a desert island (and those you'd really take, not those that'll impress the readers!)?

Pixies - Doolittle;
Yoshiesque 1 - Deep Dish;
Badmotorfinger - Soundgarden.

What would your super power be?

Shape Shifting.

What pop legend would you dress up as for a party?

Ian Dury.

Music software, what's your weapon of choice?

Logic.

What's your fave piece of music tech hardware?

Access Virus TI.

What are you most proud of?

My son.

What are your three favourite music tech techniques?

  • Creative EQing/Filtering.
  • Effects Processing (using reverb and delay to create atmospheres and tones).
  • Using distortion to aid mix separation.

What is your favourite thing about dBs?

The opportunities we offer our students to access amazing tutors and equipment. I'd have given an arm and both legs for somewhere like this when I was starting out.

If you could go back in time, where would you go?

1980s Chicago or ancient Mesopotamia to hang out with the Anunaki.

What single thing would improve the quality of your life?

More time!
