OLLY WICKES

LECTURER | PLYMOUTH

What is a memorable musical memory from your childhood?

objecting to listening to Foster and Allen on every extended car journey I went on with my mum and dad!

Listening to Bob Marley and the Wailers for the first time and thinking 'Wow, this is amazing'!

What was your most embarrassing music-related moment?

I had a meltdown when I was at school once, shortly before I was due to give a performance of 'I will always love you' which I was playing on the keyboard as part of a GCSE Music performance piece!

Most recently I was working at a British Athletics competition as the in-field engineer, delivering starter microphones to wherever they need to be at the start of each race. Whilst hurriedly trying to place a microphone before 400M race, I blindly walked out in front of a triple jumper as he was hurtling down the runway to jump. I narrowly avoided a collision. There was a whole stand of people clapping him of whom I never even noticed as I casually walked in front of him. Luckily, he was able to abort before running me over, though he was certainly unimpressed!

What three albums would you take to a desert island (and those you'd really take, not those that'll impress the readers!)?

What are you most proud of?

Marrying my wife, completing my degree, qualifying as a teacher and pursuing a job that I truly love.

What are your three favourite music tech techniques?

  • Cardioid sub arrays (gives you more sub in the right direction and less noise on stage!).
  • Glyn Johns stereo drum microphone technique (less is definitely more!).
  • Double bussing when mixing live (Old school but good!).

What is your favourite thing about dBs?

Opportunity, flexibility and being part of a great crew!

If you could go back in time, where would you go?

I'm all about here and now, baby!

What single thing would improve the quality of your life?

Not having to read and respond to so many emails.
