Instrumental in the sonic character of Moog’s Slim Phatty, Dom’s decades of experience have seen him work as a DJ, producer, composer and sound designer.

What did you do before joining dBs?

"I have spent almost 20 years as a self-employed DJ, producer, composer, and sound designer. As a DJ I’ve had residencies at the likes of Ministry Of Sound (London), Space (Ibiza), and A’Priori (Moscow). As an artist, I have produced for labels such as Global Underground, mau5trap, and I have been a composer for several publishing companies including Universal Music Publishing Group creating music for TV & Film synchronisation. As a sound designer, I have created factory presets for all sorts of synths from the Moog Sub 37 to Xfer Serum."

Why did you first get into producing?

"I have a driving passion for electronic music. I’ve always loved every aspect - from the performance side to the technical - so while it began with learning various instruments and then moved to local gigs and hospital radio, it soon grew to putting on events of my own and eventually setting up my own record label while being amongst the first wave of DJs to create online radio. Being the age I am, I was lucky enough to witness and enjoy the birth of electronic music in the late 80s and 90s and the birth of the internet too, so I feel like it was always a natural development for me to grow in these areas and eventually help educate others into the same industry."

Any special areas of interest?

"I’ve always enjoyed life at the forefront of technology, which continues to excite and inspire me today."

What do you love most about what you do?

"People say that if you can turn a hobby into a career then you’ll never work a day in your life. I’ve been so lucky to have travelled the world with music and been to places and events I couldn’t have even dreamt of beforehand."

Tell us about your proudest career moment.

"My proudest moment was probably the first time I was approached by Moog and asked to create some sound content for one of their synths. It was a limited edition Moog Slim Phatty and all the factory presets for that unit were made by Orbital, Chad Jackson, and myself."

What do you get up to outside of dBs?

"I’ve got way too many expensive hobbies to be honest, from building and flying quadcopters, to driving fast cars on race tracks.  Aside from those, I like most outdoor activities from climbing mountains to kayaking, and most combat sports from Jiu Jitsu to mixed martial arts."

Tell us something our students may not know about you.

"I may seem like a confident public speaker and performer right now, but I used to be one of the most nervous kids in school you could imagine."
